Tim Brown Moves Closer to Ninth Title at Bowman Gray
“The Rocket” jumps to three points out of the lead.
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Tim Brown of Rural Hall claimed the checkered on Saturday, giving him a critical boost in the points battle for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series.
“I’m really excited and really happy. To have four wins this early in the season - I’m just blessed,” said Brown. “We’re gaining in the points, winning races – I think we’ve won the most races and won the most poles already this year. So this season’s turning out to look pretty good.”
“I hope we can just keep this momentum going and keep the car running like it is and capitalize on all these moments. We want to win that ninth championship,” said Brown, whose eight Modified titles tie him with Ralph Brinkley for the most Stadium championships. One more title will shatter the record and leave Tim Brown standing alone in the record books.
But Brown says that concentrating on the points at this stage in the season is a mistake. “It’ still too early to start thinking about points – we’re just trying to sit on the pole and win some races,” said Brown. “It’s in the back of your mind – you don’t want to have bad nights. But our team’s just focused right now on building a good, fast race car.”
Brown’s victory takes him from third to second in the points, only three points out of the lead. Jason Myers of Walnut Cove hangs onto the lead with a sixth place finish, but Myers’s once stout lead has dwindled over the past few weeks.
Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem was in a potentially disastrous points situation on Saturday after he began hearing strange sounds coming from his motor during pre-race practice. But Jonathan’s brother, Joseph Brown, stepped up and offered his ride to Jonathan.
Although that allowed Jonathan to have a dependable machine, it was a challenge to compete in a car that he had never raced in before. But a little luck allowed him to draw up close to the front for his start, and some driving skill allowed him to stay there. Jonathan Brown ended up finishing third.
“Before we started the race, I told the guys that I’d be happy with a top-five finish in a car I never drove,” said Jonathan. “If I would have been in that 22 car, we probably would have led every lap of it. But all in all, it wasn’t a bad points night.”
Jonathan Brown climbs up to third in the points, with John Smith of Mount Airy moving up to fourth in the points. Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg falls from second in the points down to fifth after a flat tire sends him sliding into the guard rail.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Derek Stoltz of Walkertown takes over the points lead after finishing sixth and fourth on Saturday. Jeff Garrison of Arcadia drops out of the points lead but stays only six points out of the lead.
Billy Gregg of Lexington maintains the points lead in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, with David Sumner of Trinity slowly closing the gap.
In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, Charlie Curry stays atop the points ladder.
The Modifieds will duke it out this Saturday night in twin 25-lappers, plus there will be racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions. And the night will end with the sliding thrills of the 109 U-Pull-It Skid Race.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
