Record-Breaking Hopes for Tim Brown at Bowman Gray
Record for most wins and most championships on Brown’s mind.
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) In 1989, Johnny Johnson won five races before the July 4th break at Bowman Gray Stadium. It was a feat that no one had yet matched in over twenty years at the Madhouse – until Saturday night when Tim Brown of Rural Hall grabbed his fifth checkered flag of the season.
And that record is minor compared to the aims that Brown has for the near future. Brown currently is third on the all-time featured win list at the Stadium with 63 wins. He’s close to surpassing Ralph Brinkley’s 64 victories. Then, “the Rocket” has his sights set on passing Junior Miller’s record for the most featured wins ever: 71 checkered flags.
But the record that Brown is most hoping to break in 2012 is the record for most Stadium Modified championships. He currently ties Ralph Brinkley for the most titles – each having eight.
“I grew up coming to the Stadium,” said Brown. “I watched Ralph win races. I used to sit up there and want to drive a car. I never dreamed I’d come out here and actually be competitive, win, and tie Ralph with championships – and then to have a shot at tying his second-most all-time win record.”
“We’ve got our head down, we’re digging, and we want championship number nine bad,” said Brown. “If we keep running like we’re running, I think we’ll be OK.”
Tim Brown moved one step closer to the 2012 championship by claiming the victory on Saturday. He gained two points on points leader Jason Myers of Walnut Cove, reducing Myers’s lead down to just one point.
Although Myers continues to hold onto his points lead, Brown has steadily whittled it down week after week. “I’m just riding this high. The car is running well right now. I just hope to keep taking advantage of it,” said Brown.
John Smith of Mount Airy brought home the win in the second Modified race on Saturday. The “Madhouse Scramble” sent Smith to the pole for the start of the second race, with Jason Myers starting on the outside front row.
During the initial start, Smith secured the lead while Myers was caught on the outside and lost a few precious positions. Smith moves up to third in the points, with Lee Jeffreys of Wallburg climbing up to fourth in the points.
Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem continued his battle with engine issues. For the second week in a row, Brown elected to start in a backup car after his primary machine encountered mechanical trouble. But Brown’s backup car wasn’t safe from problems either – more engine issues struck, dropping him from third in the points down to fifth.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Derek Stoltz of Walkertown strengthens his points lead. Jeff Garrison of Arcadia holds his second place ranking but loses a little ground to Stoltz.
David Sumner of Trinity moves into the points lead for the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series, passing by Billy Gregg of Lexington.
In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, A.J. Sanders of Mocksville ended his race early due to mechanical problems on Saturday. He stays second in the points but fell further behind points leader Charlie Curry of Welcome – who took the checkered on Saturday.
The racing will get intense this Saturday – it’s the G-OIL Twin Modified 50’s presented by the Winston-Salem Journal. The Double-File Restart Rule will be in effect for the twin 50-lappers for the Modifieds – and the restart cone will also make an appearance in a 60-lap Sportsman race. The Street Stock and Stadium Stock Divisions race, and the Special Forces Parachute Team will perform a parachute jump.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
