Brown Grabs Points Lead at Bowman Gray
Ninth Championship a Little Bit Closer.
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) After the dust settled from Saturday’s double points night at Bowman Gray Stadium, Tim Brown of Rural Hall was one step closer to his goal of taking the 2012 championship.
Winning the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series championship would be no small occasion for Brown. He’s already tied with Ralph Brinkley for the most Modified titles, and he’s hoping to grab one more and shatter the record.
Brown has risen and fallen in the points, but the first time he jumped into the lead was Saturday. With double points on the line, a third place finish from “the Rocket” boosted him on top of the points ladder.
“Week to week, we think about sitting on the pole and winning races – but now there’s only five weeks to go and we’re leading the points,” said Brown. “The championship is definitely on my mind. That’s what we work all winter for.”
The #83 of Brown worked through the field on Saturday up to third place behind Junior Miller of Danbury. Brown opted to play it safe with Miller. “With double points on your mind, I didn’t force the issue to pass him. Because with my luck, I would’ve wound up getting spun, finished 17th, and lost points,” said Brown.
Meanwhile, Jason Myers of Walnut Cove wasn’t having as smooth of a night. “I think I got in about every wreck there was - I had to go to the rear a couple times,” said Myers. “We had a good car. I guarantee I passed more cars than anybody else tonight - but I was passing the same ones back and forth over and over.”
“I kept it tight, kept it closed up, didn’t let anybody in front of me tonight – but just came up way short,” said Myers, who ended up finishing 10th. That drops Myers down to second in the points, 15 points behind Brown.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Derek Stoltz of Walkertown finished sixth, keeping him in the points lead. Points contender Jeff Garrison of Arcadia finished right in front of him in fifth, cutting down Stoltz’s points lead slightly.
Billy Gregg of Lexington finished second on Saturday in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock Series. The performance strengthens Gregg’s already stout points lead, distancing him further from David Sumner of Trinity.
In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, points contender A.J. Sanders of Mocksville took the checkered. But points lead Charlie Curry of Welcome came in fourth, maintaining his spot at the top of the ladder.
This Saturday is the night that many have been waiting for: the Sheetz Night of Destruction. There will be racing for all four divisions plus a monster truck car crushing exhibition. And the night ends with the crashing of the 109 U-Pull-It Demolition Derby.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice, and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
