Roller-Coaster Ride for Brown & Myers at Bowman Gray
(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) Saturday night at Bowman Gray Stadium started out rather calmly but quickly turned into a roller-coaster ride for the points contenders.
Tim Brown of Rural Hall claimed the checkered in the first 50-lapper for the Brad’s Golf Cars Modified Series. Jason Myers of Walnut Cove finished fifth, keeping Brown’s first-race gains small.
The “Madhouse Scramble” inversion flipped their starting position, and Myers was on track to eliminate any increase at all by Brown. Myers, however, was caught on the outside groove during the opening laps and fell back a few positions.
Brown and Myers fought their way through the field. The #83 car of Brown was in third and hoping to claim the checkered in the second race as well. But as Jonathan Brown of Winston-Salem fought with Danny Bohn of Huntersville for the lead, Jonathan Brown spun and collided with Tim Brown.
With Tim Brown falling back to the rear, it seemed like Myers was then in a promising position to make some ground in the points. But Brown fought forward amazingly to earn a seventh place finish.
“We won the first race, had a shot at winning the second one, wrecked, and still finished seventh,” said Brown. “Things are just going our way.”
The first-race victory moved him ahead of Ralph Brinkley’s total win record at the Stadium. “I just got one more record of Ralph’s to break this year and I’ll be happy,” said Brown, referencing his bid to take his ninth Modified title this season and break Ralph Brinkley’s record for the most Modified championships.
“It’s been a great year. Everything’s just going well, and the car’s phenomenal,” said Brown. “I already call it my best season ever just because I’m having fun.”
Meanwhile, Myers battled with Jonathan Brown during the final laps of the second 50-lapper. Jonathan Brown nudged Myers to the outside and passed by Myers’s #4 car.
Myers finished fifth, keeping Tim Brown to a slim one-point gain. Jonathan Brown finished second and fourth, moving him closer to Myers and Brown in the rankings.
In the Webb Heating & A/C Co. Sportsman Series, Derek Stoltz of Walkertown distances himself slightly from Jeff Garrison of Arcadia.
David Sumner of Trinity was involved in a collision in the Q104.1 New Country Street Stock race on Saturday, dropping him down to third in the points. John Holleman of Winston-Salem moves up to second to challenge points leader Billy Gregg of Lexington.
In the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series, Charlie Curry of Welcome smoothly finished second, adding to his points lead. A.J. Sanders of Mocksville finished third to stay close behind Curry in the battle for the champion.
