Myers Hustles to Stay Ahead at Bowman Gray

(Bowman Gray Stadium, Winston-Salem, NC) When the competition is as tight as it is at Bowman Gray Stadium, if you’re not making improvements, you’re moving backwards. And that’s something that Burt Myers of Walnut Cove has taken to heart.
He entered last event with three poles, five wins, and a stout points lead. But he was not about to be complacent.
“We came over here again this Saturday morning in this sweltering heat, and it’s terrible. But we busted our butts to get this car to go as fast as we can,” said Myers, who says that his team is constantly experimenting in an effort to improve their car.
“We’re throwing things at it and trying things,” said Myers. “People question us – my wife even questions why we change things on the car. They wonder why we want to change things if we’re running well.”
“But a friend of mine reminds me constantly: no matter how fast you are, you can always be better,” said Myers. “And that’s what drives me to make my car as good as we can get it.”
And Myers had his hands full on Saturday. With starting lineup being decided strictly by qualifying times, teams had to work their hardest to qualify well – and then make quick adjustments to get their cars in prime condition for the actual race. On top of this challenge, qualifying order is set by points – meaning Myers has the extra added pressure of being the first to qualify.
“You’re handicapped when you qualify first,” said Myers, who points out that track conditions and tire rubber from the other divisions make it a distinct disadvantage to qualify early. “You have to throw everything you can at it to qualify and then back up on that and adjust it for the race.”
But although Myers grabbed the pole, his race setup wasn’t where he wanted it to be. He managed to still take the win in the first race but slipped a little in the second race, causing him to lose a few points.
“It’s a little disheartening when you sit on the pole and win the race and still lose points – but I lost points to my brother,” said Myers. “He reminded me of that.”
Jason Myers of Walnut Cove gains a few points on Burt, maintaining his second place ranking and moving a little closer to the lead. John Smith of Mount Airy stays in third – only three points behind Jason Myers.
In the Classic Muscle Sportsman Series, Mack Little of Kernersville made his way through the field to finish second in both races on Saturday, adding to his points lead. Zack Clifton of Walkertown also turned in an impressive performance, claiming the checkered in the second race to keep Little’s points gain to a minimum.
Doug Wall of Pfafftown climbed from 21st up to ninth. John Holleman of Winston-Salem started ninth and was surely looking to gain some valuable ground on Wall. Unfortunately, Holleman was involved in a wreck. Wall stays in the lead and widens the margin separating him from Holleman.
Double points were at stake on Saturday in the Summer Shootout Stadium Stock Series due to rain postponement on July 13. Chuck Wall stepped up amidst the pressure, finishing second and increasing his points lead.
In the Sportsman race, Bryant Robertson took his frustration out on Derek Stoltz during a caution period. Robertson, who was placed on probation just one week earlier, was suspended for the remainder of the 2013 season as a result of his actions.
The points battles continue this Saturday night – it will be Kevin Powell Motorsports $2 Ladies’ Night. Women get in for only two bucks to see twin 50s for the Modifieds, plus racing for the Sportsman, Street Stock, and Stadium Stock Divisions.
And as a special guest of Kevin Powell Motorsports, Tim Smith from Discovery Channel’s “Moonshiners” will be on site to participate in awards presentations.
Gates open at 6:00 for practice and the first race begins at 8:00 PM – this Saturday night. Ticket prices, directions, and more information can be found online at www.bowmangrayracing.com or by calling (336) 723-1819.
